Author: Cassandra Clare

Rating: 4/5

Magic is dangerous - but love is more dangerous still... When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray arrives in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Friendless and hunted, Tessa seeks refuge with the Shadowhunters, a band of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by - and torn between - two best friends, and quickly realizes that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

This book is the first in a planned trilogy by Cassandra Clare called the Infernal Devices.
It is the prequel series to the hugely successful The mortal instruments.
The story focuses on 16 year old Tessa Gray who arrives in London from New York to meet her brother, but she quickly get's dragged into a mystery world where everything from vampires, faeries, warlocks and werewolves exist.

Shes drawn deeper into the world of shadowhunters who exist to rid the world of demons and
she's discovered to have a supernatural power that she cannot explain. Will a Shadowhunter is the main protagonist who rescues Tessa when she's imprisoned by the dark sisters, she soon realises that underneath the handsome face lies something dark and deadly and she soon falls for him.
There are quite a few comparisons that can be drawn from this with the mortal instruments series, but because it is set in a different era, it makes it fresh and exciting to read. The other character is called Jem who is Will's best Friend but hes slowly dying due to an addiction.

The reader is constantly kept guessing at what causes Tessa's strange power, how does she not know what she is? What is Will's dark secret? And why are the downworlders after her? Who is building these clockwork creatures called automatons? will she ever find her brother? And finally who will she choose will or Jem? You have to read the book to find out!

I personally loved this book, and was thinking about it for long after i finished it! There are a lot of questions left unanswered, so i cannot wait for clockwork prince to come out. It is well worth a read!
